Excerpts from a letter written by Mark Atwood,
February 1968:
.......My father was the youngest child
of Royal Atwood who died at, and is buried at, Trempealeau, Wis. He
died in 1879. My father, Herman, was born (I have always thought
near Waupun, Wis.) in 1865. In 1867, the family moved to the
vicinity of Trempealeau and Galesville in Trempealeau Co., Wis. In
1881 my father, at the age 16, came out to near Sioux Falls, Dak.
Territory, and worked for a family by the name of Barber who were
also Atwood relatives. The next winter he stayed with his mother, I
believe then in Galesville, and then came out to De Smet, Dak.
Territory in the spring of 1882 to work for and live with his aunt,
Alzina Atwood-Whiting. She was a sister of Royal and an aunt of my
father. The Whitings were among the very earliest settlers near De
Smet. ..... My father then "proved up" on a quarter of land in the
neighborhood. He proved this up as a tree claim so saved his
homestead right to be used in another part of South Dakota many
years later. You understand of course that that area was Dakota
Territory until 1889 at which time the Territory was split into
North Dakota and South Dakota and each portion was admitted as a
State. A new and different railroad was built north and south
through the County and the new town of Erwin was established about
12 miles north east of De Smet, or about 6 miles north of my
father's farm (tree claim). About a year later, the claim shanty on
my father's farm burned, so after spending that winter on the Atwood
farm with my uncle Erwin, they came back and acquired other land,
was in the grain business and prospered. In the fall of 1919, they
retired, bought a home in Long Beach, Cal. He lived only one month
after buying this home and died there in Dec. 1919. I was 19 at the
time. We went back to Erwin and I lived there until about 1951. My
father married Jane Barker, the daughter of a neighboring pioneer,
in 1886. She lived to be almost 94. My father was only 54 at the
time of his death.
