BATTLES NOTES

CORA MARIE BATTLES was born November 25, 1856, at Lansing, Allamakee, Iowa, and died April 8, 1923, Vale, Malheur, Oregon; buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing twsp., Allamakee Co., Iowa.

Both the 1910 Census and the 1920 Census for Stark County, North Dakota, where Cora (Battles) Lytle lived at the time, show that her father was born in Vermont and her mother was born in New York. See the Lytle page for more detail.

Although Cora's death certificate gives her father's name as George, the 1860 Iowa census lists the head of household as Augustus S. Battles and the 1880 Iowa census lists Cora as a daughter in the household of A. L. Battles. Augustus S. Battles and A. L. Battles are probably the same person.

Cora's death certificate gives her mother's name as Elizabeth Day, but the 1860 census and 1880 census seem to point toward Clara (no known surname). A Mary Day and a Rachel Day are listed as part of the household in the 1860 census. They could possibly be sisters of Cora's mother.

Cora M. Battles and John O. Lytle had a son named Robert Day Lytle. A daughter of Robert's sister, Ruth, was named Ruth Day Whiting. It is evident that the name "Day" was passed down in the family.  Note that Cora's first child was named Clara Elizabeth, so either the name Elizabeth from the mother named on the death certificate or Clara for the person named in the census could have been passed down to her first child . . . or perhaps both?

There is the possibility that Cora's father could have been married more than once, but there is no evidence of it.

CHURCHES - The Methodist Episcopal Church was organized by the Rev. R.A. Bishop, in 1852. A Sunday school was then organized in connection with the church, and George H. Battles was chosen Superintendent. Rev. Bishop preached his first sermon in 1851, in the house of Elijah Hale, one of Lansing's early settlers. Mr. Bishop was then traveling a circuit, including the valley of Turkey River, and all of Iowa northeast of it. When the M.E. society was organized, it was composed of nineteen members and probationers, among whom were William Hemingway, George H. Battles and S.M. Baldwin, three old-fashioned pioneer Methodists, and three as good men as ever made their homes in Iowa.
