1. JOHN LYTLE (LYTTLE) was born in
1822 (from tombstone) in Alfred, Ontario (Upper Canada), and died July 4, 1893.
He married (1) ELEANOR CURRY Abt. 1844 in Westmeath, Ontario,
Canada. She was born September 11, 1829, and died February 11, 1846 in
Westmeath, Ontario, Canada. He married (2) ELIZABETH MERRIER
November 21, 1852 in Onalaska, Wisconsin. She was born in Norway, and
died Abt. 1863. He married (3) EMALINE "EMMA" WOOD March 5, 1864
in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. She died July 31, 1867. He married (4)
JULIA MILLER January 1, 1868 in La Crosse County, Wisconsin,
daughter of LAURENTZIUS MOLLER (MILLER) and ELIZABETH ________. She was born June 4,
1846 in Norway, and died 1929 in Miles City, Montana. The Norwegian
spelling of the name is Moller.
John Lytle was possibly married five times. According to a source, "There was speculation he had one wife run off and it was
never spoken of." He emigrated to the U.S. in 1851 to La Crosse Co.,
Wisconsin. On Sept. 3, 1853, he made Declaration of Citizenship before
the clerk of court at La Crosse. In 1861, he was drafted into the U.S.
Army. His Civil War service record has not been uncovered.
Above, right, is a picture of the Lytle house. The writing on the
bottom of the picture reads, "House near La Crosse, Wisc. Lucy born
here." The house is still standing (as of January 2006).
John moved to Troy, South Dakota, in May of 1879, living seven miles
north of Troy until his death. U.S. Land Office documents, serial no.
033300 & 036301, supports dates. The following death notice does appear
in the La Crosse newspaper however.

"John Lytle, of Midway, whose serious illness was mentioned in these
columns, last week, died at his home Tuesday forenoon. He was one of the
pioneers of La Crosse county and is very generally known. He had been a
very active man until about one year ago since when his health has been
very poor. He lived to the advanced age of about seventy years and
leaves a wife and family of twelve children. The funeral occurs at the
home this afternoon at 2 o'clock and will be conducted by the Masons."

did not marry, according to family knowledge. In 1893, he was shown as
living in Onalaska, Wisconsin. Later, est. 1910-1919, he was in Miles
City, Montana, and worked for David Levi Lytle, his half-brother, in the

The South Dakota Land Patents Database lists Francis J. Lytle with
three parcels, each dated 07/10/1888, and totaling 157.09 acres, in
Codington County. John Lyttle had a 160-acre parcel, dated 02/20/1882,
and John O. Lyttle had a 160-acre parcel, dated 05/10/1887. According to the
1910 Census for North Dakota (Sheet No. 1A, Line 31, enumerated
April 15, 1910), Frank Lytle, age 50, lived in Dickinson and was a grain
buyer at an elevator. He was listed as a Lodger and Single. His place of
residence was on Second Avenue East. Cora M. Lytle (ex-wife of Frank's
brother, J.O. Lytle), and her family, lived on First Avenue East.

xiii. LUCY LYTLE, b. February 19, 1876, Onalaska, Wisconsin; d.
1969, Miles City, Montana, at the age of 93 years; m. RICHARD SORENSON, Abt.
1925. Lucy Lytle lived with her mother (Julia) from the time of
her father's death in 1893. Probate records show that the farm home near
Onalaska was sold in 1900. They lived in Miles City, Montana, from
approximately 1910 to the end of their lives. Lucy had no children, but
Lucy had reared her niece, Anna Julia Adeline Lytle, whose mother had died
in childbirth. Lucy died
at 93. Lucy worked keeping books at the grain elevator for several years.

xiv. MILFORD LYTLE, b. August 12, 1877, Onalaska, Wisconsin; d.
Bet. 1950 - 1955, Arizona; m. JOSEPHINE MEADE. He was at home
at the age of 16 when his father John died. He and Josephine had three
children, two girls and a boy. He was in the grain business in North
Dakota as well as Saskatchewan. He also at one time owned a hotel in
Canada. He was in a number of ventures and lived for a time in
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
xv. ARTHUR LYTLE, b. March 3, 1881, Onalaska, Wisconsin; d. March
2, 1913; m. MINNIE FIRTH. Arthur was killed in an auto accident in Beach, North Dakota,
where they lived. His widow married ADAM FARIS in 1915 and the
children were formally adopted by him. By 1920, the Faris family was
living in Des Moines, Iowa. They later moved to Washington state where
both Minnie and Adam died.

2. JAMES LYTLE was born 1846. He
married MARIE THERESA SMITH 1876 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Only
record up to now is that their son lived for a time in De Soto,
Wisconsin, that he was for a time at least in the grain business and
that David L. Lytle, Sr., worked for him and learned the grain business.

3. CHARLES LYTLE was born 1847, and
died at Lansing twsp., Allamakee Co., Iowa, bur. Oak Hill Cemetery. He
married ALICE HANEY Abt. 1878 in De Soto, Wisconsin. Charles
lived in De Soto for many years and was in the lumber business there.
Three daughters were born: Rachel, Maude Alice, Adah and one son
James who died at age 1 year. Charles possibly ran a grain elevator in
Lansford, North Dakota for a time prior to 1910.

4. JOHN OSCAR LYTLE
was born July 21,1854 in Onalaska, Wisconsin, and died July 18, 1928,
Miles City, Montana. He married
CORA MARIE BATTLES. She was born November 25, 1856 in Lansing,
Allamakee, Iowa, and died April 8, 1923 in Vale, Malheur, Oregon; bur.
Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing twsp., Allamakee Co., Iowa.
John was listed in the probate of his father's will as living in
Jefferson Co., Wisconsin in 1893.
The South Dakota Land Patents Database lists Francis J. Lytle with
three parcels, each dated 07/10/1888, and totaling 157.09 acres, in
Codington County. John Lyttle had a 160-acre parcel, dated 02/20/1882,
and John O. Lyttle had a 160-acre parcel, dated 05/10/1887 (both are
probably the same person). Watertown is currently the county seat of
Codington County and is where John's first two children were born.

According to the 1910 census, taken April 15, 1910, Robert and Alice had
a daughter, HELEN D. LYTLE, age 2. His occupation was listed as a
Real Estate Broker. He and his family were living with his mother, Cora
M. Lytle, and sisters, Ruth and Marjorie, in Dickinson, North Dakota.

According to Stark County, North Dakota Marriage Records, Book 5, Thomas
Goob Saunders, 29, and Nina Lucile Campbell, 20, were also married
December 5, 1906, in Stark County, North Dakota.
Robert Day Lytle Papers, Ax 788, Division of Special
Collections and University Archives, University of Oregon, Eugene,
Oregon: Robert Lytle was born in Watertown, South Dakota and received a
high school education in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He studied law in LaCrosse
and elsewhere, coming to Oregon via South Dakota and Montana in 1915. He
was admitted to the Oregon bar in 1916, and commenced his practice in
Vale. From 1920-1925, Lytle was Malheur County District Attorney, and
served as city attorney for Vale, 1922-1967. A Republican, Lytle was
moderately active in politics. The collection includes a few personal
files, but most of the collection includes selected case files
representative of a varied practice, including cases regarding water
rights. Miscellaneous files include correspondence in political matters,
Oregon State Bar Association, Japanese-Americans in Malheur County, and
Oregon State Bar v. Weinstein.
iii. RUTH LYTLE, b. February 8, 1886, De Soto, Wisconsin; d.
February 2, 1955, Mandan, North Dakota; buried Union Cemetery, Mandan,
North Dakota. She married EUGENE
LOUIS WHITING, June 21, 1920, in Dickinson, North Dakota, the
son of LOUIS E. WHITING and ELSIE SHERWOOD. He was born November 8, 1882
in De Smet, Dakota Territory, and died November 15, 1964 in Moorhead,
Minnesota; buried Union Cemetery, Mandan, North Dakota. The baptismal
record for Eugene Whiting shows that he was baptized April 24, 1922, at
St. John's Episcopal Church, Dickinson, by The Rev. Alex Coffin. Ruth
Whiting and Mrs. H. Robinson were listed as sponsors. The records of St.
John's also show that Ruth Lytle was confirmed by Bishop Cameron Mann on
November 9, 1913, 25th Sunday after Trinity, presented by The Rev. G.
Bragaw. (The records of the church spells the name with two Ts, ie.,

5. ELIZABETH (LIZZIE) LYTLE was born
October 26, 1863, and died March 6, 1924. She married JOHN C. HULL
1880. Third child and first daughter of this marriage was apparently
named for her mother. She was born in 1862, and was married in 1880 to
John C. Hull of Onalaska, WI. She was always known as "Lizzie" to her
family. She had one child, a daughter Maude. Maude married a Fred Barlow
who according to brother Jim was a jeweler in New York City. No info as
to date of death or where for Elizabeth "Lizzie."

6. DAVID LEVI LYTLE was born
September 18, 1868 in Onalaska, Wisconsin, and died 1928 in South
Dakota; bur. Red Wing, Minnesota. He purchased grains for the
military during WWI. He married IDA M. BOXRUD, daughter of JOHN
BOXRUD and HELMINA AMUNDSON. She was born 1878, and died 1967 in South
Dakota. Ida was of Goodhue, Minn. Her parents were Norwegian immigrants
who arrived in the U.S. just before the Civil War. Ida was one of nine
children. At right is David Levi Lytle at age 42 in about 1910.

7. JENNIE LYTLE was born 1869 in
Onalaska, Wisconsin, and died May 8, 1908. She married CHARLES
BOSSHARD Bef. 1893. Charles Bosshard was of Rockland, Wisconsin.
They had two children, Royal and Phyllis. The Bosshards
lived in Tolley, North Dakota, prior to or after 1910, and Jennie
possibly died there.

i. ROYAL BOSSHARD, who had lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and
then California.

8. THOMAS LYTLE was born January 26,
1874 in Onalaska, Wisconsin. He married ______ ________. He was
in Onalaska until at least 1893 at the time of the probate of John
Lytle's will. It is known that he was married but no information as to
whom. He had one daughter, Anna, who was raised on the homestead in the
Horton Flat area near Hathaway, Montana, by her grandmother, Julia (Moller/Miller)
Lytle, after her mother died in childbirth.

9. CLARA ELIZABETH LYTLE, was born
April 19, 1882 in Watertown, Dakota Territory, and died May 5, 1970 in
Vale, Oregon; bur. Valley View Cemetery, Vale. She married LOUIS
ARTHUR SEAMAN, son of ANDREW SEAMAN and LOUISE CLARK, December 24,
1904, at the Presbyterian Church, La Crosse, Wisconsin. He was born
October 21, 1873, Troy, South Dakota, and died December 17, 1950, Boise,
Ada, Idaho.
Clara Seaman is listed in the 1920 census for Dickinson, Stark County,
North Dakota, age 35, with her son Donald M. Seaman, age 8, her sister,
Ruth Lytle, age 33, and her mother, Cora M. Lytle, age 59, as head of
household. Clara's occupation is listed as a milliner in a millinery
store (hat store).
Clara E. Seaman is listed in the 1930 census as living in Portland,
Oregon, as the Head of Household. No one else is listed as living with
her. She is listed as divorced and working as a saleslady in a
department store.
In the 1930 census, Donald Seaman is listed as living with his father,
Louis Seaman, in Blue Island, Cook, Illinois. Louis is listed as a
widower, age 56, born in North Dakota. His occupation is a clerk at
Western Union. Donald is listed as born in North Dakota, age 18, and
attending school.

10. MARJORIE LYTLE was born February
5, 1892 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and died May 1981. She married
MILTON F. SKOGLUND, son of Andrew Skoglund and Anna (Dahlgren)
Skoglund, born May 8, 1889, Kanabec County, Minnesota, and died December
1971. They lived in Contra Costa County, California. (See the photo of
the Skoglund family below.)
The 1930 Federal Census lists the family as living in Mora, Kanabec,
Minnesota. Milton's occupation is listed as an assistant cashier at a
bank. At the time of his death in January of 1927, his father, Andrew
Skoglund, was president of the State Bank of Brunswick, near Mora.

(Marjorie's Social Security Number was issued in California; Milton's
Social Security Number was issued in Minnesota.)
